Halloween, a holiday that has become synonymous with spooky decorations and costumes, has its roots in ancient festivals. The Celts, who lived in what is now Ireland, Scotland, and the United Kingdom, celebrated Samhain, a festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter.
As Christianity spread throughout Europe, the early Christian church tried to eliminate these pagan traditions. In the 7th century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1st as All Saints' Day, followed by All Souls' Day on November 2nd. This created a three-day celebration that would eventually become Halloween.
Despite this attempt to suppress the old ways, many of the original Samhain traditions continued to be practiced in secret. The veil between the living and the dead was believed to be at its thinnest on All Hallows' Eve, making it a time for divination, fortune-telling, and communication with the spirits.
As European settlers arrived in North America, they brought their own traditions with them. The early American colonies celebrated harvest festivals and would later adopt many of the British customs surrounding All Hallows' Eve.
However, it wasn't until the mid-19th century that Halloween began to take on a more modern form. Irish immigrants, fleeing the Great Famine, brought their own unique traditions with them, including the wearing of costumes and trick-or-treating.
The 20th century saw the rise of mass-produced decorations, costumes, and candy, cementing Halloween's place as a major commercial holiday.
